Mr. Charles Correa – Eminent Architect

Charles Correa studied Architecture at the University of Michigan and at MIT. In private practice since 1958, some of his important works are the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial at Sabarmati Ashram, Jawahar Kala Kendra in Jaipur, and the State Assembly for Madhya Pradesh . From 1970-1975, he was Chief Architect for ‘Navi Mumbai’ an urban growth center of 2 million people. In 1985, the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi appointed him Chairman of the National Commission on Urbanisation. Architect, planner, activist and theoretician, Correa has emerged as a major figure in contemporary architecture worldwide. He has received many honours: in 1980 - Hon. Doctorate by the University of Michigan; in 1984 - Gold Medal of the Royal Institute of British Architects; in 1987 - Gold Medal of the Indian Institute of Architects, in 1990 - Gold Medal of the UIA ( International Union of Architects); in 1994 - the Praemium Imperiale from Japan and in 1998 the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
